Q. It's that pesky magic book fairy again! She has another wish: What imaginary book world would you like to make a reality?

{ ++ } Wow.  So MANY places immediately come to mind, like Hogwarts!  Or the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood (which is more a subculture than a new world) or Terry Brook's magic kingdom of Landover, or Panem to fight against the Capitol in the Hunger Games.  But I think I'm gonna have to go with the 'verse Robert Jordan created for his Wheel of Time series.  I think I would fit in well with the Aiel.  :)

Q: As a book blogger, how do you introduce yourself in your profile? 

 

{ ++ } Awesome question!  My profile is done in the same format here, on LiveJournal, Twitter, Goodreads, and Facebook, with just a few additions/variations.  I list a few quirks/traits about myself and a few interests, so anyone who stumbles across me in any of the above places will have an idea of who I am.  And then of course I have an "about me" page where I go more in depth.  I think our profiles are an awesome way of doing a mini-introduction to the online world, and are especially important for us as book bloggers. 

I'll end with my Blogger profile.  : )

I'm 26 years old, and a little more girly and Southern than I'd like to admit. I work at Lowes and spend way too much time reading, or writing in the 'verse my best friend and I created together, where I probably juggle more characters than I should. I love my friends fiercely, and they stick by me despite my oddities. I love my life, and am generally a happy and positive-thinking person.

Q. In books like the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series the paranormal creature in question "comes out of the closet" and makes itself known to the world. Which mythical creature do you wish would come out of the closet, for real?

 { ++ } Oh NO question here: werewolves.  Preferably the alpha-male-sexy-as-nobody's-business-looking-for-a-mate kind.  I love me some werewolves.  (What can I say, I gotta give Stephenie Meyer for creating the awesome/breath-taking Jacob Black.)   OOH.  Or, I'd love for Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld (hiii, I'll take Kane please) to make themselves known.  :)

This is Jasper.  He has a brother called Rex who looks eerily like him, except Rex is sleeker, with a longer body.  I think Jazz was in attack mode when I took this picture.  :D

Question of the Week

If you could write yourself a part in a book, what book would it be and what role would you play in that book?

{ ++ } Oh wow.  Oh wow.  GREAT question.  It all depends on the book!  I am drawn to all sorts of books - dystopian, where I'd love to be THE character rebelling and causing a fuss; fantasy, on a quest to save the world, or young adult paranormal and be a kick-ass werewolf.  heehee.

But I think I'd write myself into a women's fiction book by someone like Jodi Picoult or Jennifer Weiner and be one of those characters who, through some trials and heartaches and adventures, becomes a better version of herself.  Those are my heroines.  :)

What’s the LONGEST book you’ve ever read? 

{ ++ } The final book in Stephen King's Dark Tower series - at once one of my favorite books ever, and also one of the few books I have ever hated.  It's a bit of a paradox, I suppose, but this book clutched my heart tight,broke it, then slapped it back together haphazardly.  There were so many moments when I cried, and at one point, I threw the book across the room vowing never to finish it.  And yet there was a lot of beauty in it, too.  I read it in 2004 and still have not had the courage to re-read it.

Q. How has your reading habits changed since you were a teen?

{ ++ } When I was a pre-teen and teen, I was reading a LOT of young adult books, and as I got a little bit older, I was WAY WAY into sci-fi/fantasy.  My tastes started to mature a little, branch out, and although I love both genres today still, over the years I've jumped over to this one or that one.  I definitely push myself these days to read books that are out of my comfort zones, and I try to mix up what I read - ie not all fantasy on a huge stretch, not ten women's fiction in a row, etc, so that I'm always reading something different.  I read a lot more genres now - urban fantasy, women's fiction, historical fiction, paranormal romance (BIG paranormal romance fan) but I DO still love sci-fi/fantasy and I am really partial to YA these days, which is a big change for me, since before Twilight (*gulps*) I hadn't read much YA in several years!

Q: Let’s talk crazy book titles! Highlight one or two (or as many as you like!) titles in your personal collection that have the most interesting titles! If you can’t find any, feel free to find one on the internet!

{ ++ } Hmmmm.  I've got one I've never read called The Mercy of Thin Air.  Then there's Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind, or Patricia Brigg's Steal the Dragon.  But I think my favorite is still Robert Jordan's The Eye of the World.

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

{ ++ } This is the first book in Jordan's Wheel of Time series, and though I could go on and ON about how much this series means to me (I cried when the author passed away) I will instead just encourage you to read it.  : )

Q. Talk about the book that most changed or influenced your life (was it a book that turned you from an average to avid reader, did it help you deal with a particularly difficult situation, does it bring you comfort every time you read it?)

{ ++ } What a great question!  There have been several books over the years that launched my love of reading into a new genre, or ramped it up to a fever pitch.   Some authors, whether they will ever know it or not, have deeply changed the way I read books, or thought about my own writing style, and inspired me to dig deeper for my own creativity.

Books/series that totally swept me off my feet as a pre-teen: Sweet Valley High (and later, University and Senior Year), The Baby-Sitter's Club, and R.L. Stine's Fear Street series.  

Later in life: V.C. Andrews.  Patrick Rothfuss.  Beverly Lewis.  Janette Oke.  J.R. Ward.  J.K. Rowling.

And the the authors that, with their books and their writing, literally changed something about me, the way I read books, and the wy I think about good books: Jodi Picoult.  Robert Jordan.  Anne Bishop. (I can pick up Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy, and I'm home.  I start crying at the touching parts.  I laugh and laugh at the hilarious parts.  It's a little cheesy at times, but it made sense to me.  The alpha males were fucking awesome.  They bled over a little into my writing - I've since learned how to write kick-ass alpha males.  And I adored the relationships and the plot.  The trilogy will forever hold a special place in my heart.)

{ ++ } Just one?  Oh alright!  Probably Kelley Armstrong's The Calling...because um, hello, cliffhanger much?!  I so need to know what happens to these characters!  Um, wait, can I change my answer?  Maybe the third (untitled) book in Pat Rothfuss's The Kingkiller Chronicles trilogy.  BECAUSE UM.  KVOTHE.  AND GAH.  I HAVE to know how it all ends.

Highlight one book you have received this week (for review, from the library, purchased at the store, etc.) that you can’t wait to dig into!

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway.

There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1: relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

{ ++ } This week I received Jennifer Armentrougt's Half-Blood for review from the publisher, Spencer Hill.  After reading the (free!) online prequel novella, Daimon, I am even MORE excited to read this book than I was before!  The mythos seems really well developed and the main character, Alex is fiesty and really kind of awesome.  I'll be reading and reviewing this book in September!

Q. Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?

{ ++ } Just 3, huh?   Okay, let's see if I can do this!  Well #1 hands down is Jodi Picoult.  At the end of the day, she is my favorite female author.  Her stories are SO undeniably real, and I admire her to no end.  #2 is Pat Rothfuss.  He's my favorite sci-fi/fantasy author, and in some ways, probably my favorite male author.  #3 is probably J.K. Rowling.  With the Harry Potter franchise coming to an end of sorts, it's made me remember my Potter love, and it's all because of the awesome Jo Rowling.  : ) I'd love to pick those three author's brains, and just trade writing stories with each of them.

What’s the ONE GENRE that you wish you could get into, but just can’t?

{ ++ } Mystery novels.  It's not that I haven't read and enjoyed a few really awesome mystery novels.  They just aren't my cup of tea.  I like a book with some mystery TO it, just not a straight up "who did it" novel.   I read pretty much everything else voraciously.

Q. What do I do when I are not reading?

{ ++ } Where do I begin?  I blog.  I write.  When I'm not writing, I'm planning for different characters and storylines.  I LOVE to shop.  I text way too much.  I stay up late marathoning different TV shows (is it time for new Who yet?!)  I hang out with my friends, and these days, I can be found in my pool.  : )

Q: How/where do you get your books? Do you buy them or go to the library? Is there a certain website you use like paperbackswap?

{ ++ } Honestly, I wish I could say something really awesome in response, but the truth is, I live in a really small town.  Our only "book store" is the Hastings book section, or our Wal-Mart's little book section.  I try to buy my books local when I can to support my town, but I have been known to um...be turned loose in Barnes & Noble and come out with bags full of books.  I usually shop on Amazon.com.  : )   I can get the best selection there, whereas Hastings is bad to carry say, books 1 and 4 in a series but not 2 and 3.  Or just not many books that I am actually looking to buy.

Q. ACK! Your favorite book/movie character (example Hermione Granger played by the Emma chick) just walked into the room! Who is it and what would be your first reaction? You get extra points if you include visual stimulation.

{ ++ } Oh wow.  I honestly have no idea who my favorite book character is...  I have so many!  And then you get into male, female, etc.  Wow.  That's a huge question that I'll have to think on.  Wow.  Ummm.  Ok.  Daemon SaDiablo from Anne Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy is my favorite male character.  I guess that's who I'm going to go with.  I have lots that come in close but Daemon is damn sexy, charismatic, intelligent, seductive - all things I can't see many actors pulling off quite like Ian Somerhalder could.  I've adored him since Lost, and now I drool over him on The Vampire Diaries, and I think he is my "dream cast" for Daemon.

And if Daemon Sadi walked into a room I was in, I'd be immediately squee'ing, flailing, and reduced to a puddle on the floor, likely.

What keeps you reading beyond the first few pages of a book, and what makes you want to stop reading a book and put it back on the shelf?

{ ++ } Oh...so many things.  The "voice" of the main character - does he or she seem like someone I can at least somewhat identify with, and admire?  The relationships between the characters.  The author's writing style.  The actual story itself.  It all mixes in to grab my attention and keep me reading.  If the story doesn't mesh well with me, or if I don't like the characters I'm reading about, or just don't care about them, I'll stop reading the book.  Though the story usually has to be pretty bad for me to just stop reading it.  I try to finish all the books I start.

{ ++ } Ahaha, wow.  This is my kind of question.  I have SO many.  Henry and Clare from The Time Traveler's Wife.  Sam and Kent from Before I Fall.  Jamie and Claire from the Outlander series.  Daemon and Jaenelle from the Black Jewels trilogy.  Jacob and Bella from the Twilight series.  (I will be forever and forever convinced that they belonged together.)  Jo and Laurie from Little Women (damn it, there was something there.)  Ron and Hermione from the Harry Potter series.  Cathy and Chris from the Dollanganger series.  And one of the ones that mean the most to me, Katniss and Peeta from the Hunger Games series.

Q. In light of the Summer Solstice. Also known as Midsummer...let's talk about fairies. What is your favorite fairy tale or story that revolves around the fae?

{ ++ } I read a lot of supernatural themed books but not that many of them really deal with the fae.  Probably the most stand-out series I ever read that could be considered a fairy tale was Richard Baker's The Last Mythal trilogy.  It's been ages since I read the trilogy but I pretty much became obsessed with it for awhile.  I really loved the story being told and the characters as well as the whole mythos.

Half-demon, half-elf monsters infest the glades of the High Forest, the mountains around Evereska, and the very halls of Evermeet itself. They claim a birthright that was taken from them so long ago even the elves who imprisoned them forgot they existed. For millennia the daemonfey army planned, grew, and waited.

{ ++ } Um.  Wow!  What an awesome question.  However I am not really sure there was any one "aha!" moment where I realized what an avid reader I was, and was always going to be.  My mom taught me to read when I was in kindergarten and I took a book in to read to the class.  My best friend and I used to get the same book from the library and have reading contests to see who could read the book faster.  But I guess in the last ten years or so when my book collection started growing and growing...and growing, and my writing started flourishing, I realized I was a huge book dork and proud of it.  I am always going to be a reader.  People give me strange looks sometimes or wonder why I get so into this book or that one, but, this is me.  The geeky, book girl.  : )

Summer Love: Where is your ideal place to take a summer vacation & get lost in a book?

{ ++ } Oh.  Oh.  If only I could afford it, I'd love to be at a beach right now kicked back, toes in the sand, just chilling and reading some really good book.  I so rarely can afford to take vacations that anything is special.  :D

{ ++ } It's been a crazy week for me work-wise and life-wise so a kind of slow week here at my blog BUT nevertheless, a little bit late but better than not at all hopefully, it's time for the weekend and with it, the weekend memes!

{ ++ } Follow Me Friday, aka "Follow My Book Blog" is probably the coolest meme I've come across in awhile.  It's hosted over at Parajunkee's View and us amazing book-a-holics get the chance to answer a reading-related question, as well as make new friends over the weekend.  It's a great way to kick off said weekend, and a really fun and easy way of stealing our way into the hearts of fellow book blogger's.

Q. Genre Wars! What's your favorite genre and which book in that genre made it your favorite?

Oh wow, oh wow.  My favorite genre?  Ummm fantasy.  I like urban fantasy but my hands-down favorite genre is swords-and-magic-quest-evil-vs-the-good-guys-dragons-and-other-stuff fantasy.  I haven't reviewed many fantasy books on this blog because my reading has been all over the place in the last few years but my first love would have to be Terry Brooks.  I believe First King of Shannara was the first fantasy book I ever read, and from there, I proceeded to devour all of his novels.  I'm about two trilogies behind but I have VERY good memories of reading the Landover books, the Shannara books, and the Word and Void trilogy.  I'm hoping to at least re-read some of his works next year so that I can move on to the newer ones I have, but haven't read.  I have a lot of love for this author, and visit his web site regularly to catch up on his news.

Q: How many books are currently in your To-Be-Read (TBR) Pile?

My Goodreads TBR list as of today says 275 but I know there are more that I haven't listed.  Still, that's enough to keep me busy reading for...a long time!  At the rate I'm going it's probably enough for the rest of my life.  LOL.  Problem is of course that I keep finding - and buying - new and interesting books!  Every time I tell myself I need to stop...then I start all over again.  Is that an addiction?  LOL

 This week's question... It's circle time.  Time for us to open up and share.  Can you tell us FIVE quirky habits or things about you?  (We all have them...)

{ ++ } Okay, since you asked so nicely...  ;)

+ If it's a book that I am really nervous/excited about, I read the end first.  That way it tends to calm me down and I can read the book at a regular pace without freaking out.

+ No matter the season (winter, summer, etc) I have to have socks on at all times (unless I'm wearing flip-flops or something.)  My feet feel weird without socks!

+ If I don't know what I'm about to drink/eat (ie I've never had it) I have been known to sniff my food first, in public.

+ I can't stand the smell of most fruit juices or bubble gum.  Apple / orange juice is a notable exception.  Cherry/grape etc actually makes me a little nauseas.

+ I tend to be rather reserved until I get to know a person; those who know me best are not at all surprised by my sense of humor/beliefs/etc, those who don't have no idea what I am like.

This week's question is from Ivan of Ivan Bookworm:  "If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that place be?"

{ ++ }  I'd want to visit the world of Suzanne Collin's The Hunger Games trilogy.  The entire concept of the series fascinates me, and I'd like to visit the 'verse of around the time of book one, or early book two, just to see how the Districts, especially Katniss's really lived.  When I read the series their plight just really struck my heart hard, imagining these poor kids having to grow up so fast, only to one day be forced into an arena to fight, literally, for their own survival.

{ ++ } The first book I reviewed on my blog was The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss.  I'm still relatively new to the whole book-blogging world but I love that I already have a bit more of a format to my reviews than I did with the first one, and that everyone I've met has been so friendly and willing to kinda bear with me as I learn.  :)

This week's question: What is on your current play list right now?

{ ++ }  Umm, what a question!  Depends on what, and in some cases, whose play list I am listening to.  As an avid writer, I have play lists for all my characters, so if I'm writing for Ashe, for example, his play list is up, etc.  Listening to "their" music helps me focus on staying in character (I have a loud family and it seems like they are always trying to pull me out of the moment.)  As far as music I'm into at the moment, that would be Florence & the Machine, and Adele, both on repeat, namely "Hurricane Drunk" and "Rolling in the Deep."

{ ++ } Oh lordy, yes I do.  (We won't mention the Jodi Picoult incident of 2008 where I proceeded to feverishly buy up all of her books I could get my hands on... or the Jessica Andersen incident of 2011... haha).  But no seriously, when I fall really and truly for an author to the point that he/she leaves a huge impression on me, their books move me...yes.  Yes by all means, I seek out any and everything of theirs I can find, and eagerly await new releases.  It's a huge pleasure for me, finding a "new favorite" author!

{ ++ } That's a wrap for this time, but ya'll remember how much I love new friends, right?  I may not be able to be around much this weekend, due to plans tomorrow and Easter with the family on Sunday, so much love to everyone, and happy weekend and a happy holiday to those who celebrate!

{ ++ } I am so very lucky to have several friends "IRL" that I get to geek out over books with.  My BFF Juls is probably the main one - we tend to end up rec'ing a lot of books to one another, and loving them as well.  I have several friends at work too, who share my love of books, and don't mind me bending their ear/s.  Juls is kinda special to me though as we met through an online roleplaying group and became best friends over seven years ago.  We don't get to see each other very often but it's always special times when we do.  And I have to say, if I couldn't discuss, vent, laugh and cry about books with someone, I'm not sure I'd make it.  ;)

{ ++ } Let's talk about Kvothe from The Wise Man's Fear by Pat Rothfuss.  I often describe Kvothe as a smart-ass Harry Potter but that so does not do him justice.  Kvothe is a legend in his own right, but the books are only slowly clueing us in to how he became those legends.  He's a poet, he's a gentleman, he's a smart-ass, he's an arcanist.  He's made me laugh and cry.  He's tough and he'll do what has to be done.  He makes mistakes.  He's wounded, and he's fierce.  He's on a quest to find his parent's killers and hopefully learn about magic, life, the universe, and everything along the way.  He's stolen a place in my heart and has made my short list of favorite male literary characters....ever.  : )

{ ++ } Okay so here's the deal.   I have several guilty pleasures, including: Ben & Jerry's ice cream, sleeping late, tv shows including Chuck, Drop Dead Diva, and True Blood, romance movies with happy endings, and buying girly, frilly things.  :D
